Unpaid Demands of Insurance Carriers

Unpaid Demands of Insurance Carriers

As someone who might have some insurance coverage that claims to “cover” acupuncture services, you might think that your provider is being reasonably compensated. In all but a minority of situations, “in-network” providers are paid very poorly. They are not paid for their expertise, for the time it takes to do a thorough diagnosis or evaluation, nor for the time they spend doing the treatment, for all the insurance verification and billing, for the accounting required, for their overhead, let alone anything left over for take-home.

Seriously, insurance plans and the third party administrators are making huge profits while providers are expected to go bankrupt for the sake of their patients and the insurance plans.

For example, start out with the contracts and policy manuals that the carriers and third party administrators expect providers to read, understand, and follow. Are they paid to review these? No. Are they paid to take the time to understand them? No. All of that is on their free time. No providers in the acupuncture world are on salary if they have to know all of this. And the number of acupuncturists on salary? Infinitesmaly few.

Unpaid Demands of Insurance Carriers

Here is a 4 page document listing only a small number of plans. This mailer is required reading for by providers.  It is just a drop in the bucket of the papers and documents that are supposed to be read by providers and their staff.

Please take the time to read it and understand it. How much time did it take you? How much should you be paid to have to do that? Please let me know.  Because providers get zip for doing so. And if they have staff, they have to pay them to take the time to read it.  Who pays for it?  Not the insurance company.

On the other hand, how much were the writers of this paid to create it? Mucho dinero. Believe me. It is the administrators, the JACO inspectors, the policy wonks, the CEOs who are making millions off of this. But the providers you rely on for help? NOTHING.

And the administrators will blame it all on regulations. Regulations that they created to obfuscate and then blame providers for not following.

Unpaid Demands of Insurance Carriers

And I bet that your insurance premiums are going up astronomically. My personal Kaiser policy is going up 21% this coming year. Is there any corresponding increase in fees paid for treatments done? Ha Ha Ha. The jokes on you if you think that independent providers get an extra cent from the increase.

No, the joke’s on the providers who accept the plan payments. Like The Redwood Clinic. SUCKERS!!!

Is there any increase for even increases in costs? Rather, the fees continue to be cut with more and more demands to do more for free.

Unpaid Demands of Insurance Carriers

Insurance carriers and third party administrators are laughing all the way to the bank. And providers are dropping like flies. That is why there are so few providers accepting insurance. MDs, unless they are part of a medical group associated with a hospital/insurance plan complex.

The truth is, those providers lucky enough to get a job with such a medical group/hospital complex are a rarity in the alternative medicine field. The jobs are rare, and the insiders are all referring their friends to get the insider-employee referral fees. There is no hiring based on experience, it is just new-age nepotism. Speaking from experience. Age discrimination is rampant in this system apparently as well. The MDs I spoke to 2 – 3 years ago were all retiring because the system was starving them out of business. Years of clinical experience are a noose on a resume.

Unpaid Demands of Insurance Carriers

How many plans are there? Unknown, but here is a single sheet of paper distributed that is supposed to be memorized by providers. Hilarious if it weren’t so obviously clear proof that the system is broken.

One online insurance billing and verification system list 7370 insurance payors. Seven Thousand Three Hundred Seventy. What if you personally had to know which to chose to get YOUR salary from? Crazy. No, insane. But that is the system. This list is just the first 50.

The fact is that suggesting any of the above, no matter how based in fact, puts a mark on my chest, a target on my back. Was this the reason I was taken off a Kaiser referral list, in spite of the fact that I was being paid 30% – 100% less than other contracted providers? This was sex discrimmination. And would Kaiser and any of the six executives there answer any questions I sent by certified mail about the reasons for the termination? No way.

Which is sad to me because I have provided excellent service to patients there for years. Numerous patients were very upset that they couldn’t get continued care with me and Kaiser refused to explain to me or them the reasons. They wrote letters on my behalf and Kaiser officials and employees refused to provide any response.

I have also been a member of Kaiser myself for years. Paying huge premiums that have paid for the salaries of executives and middle managers in the Outside Referrals Deparment. What do you think? Should I change to another plan during this time to change Covered California Plans?  Why did the following executives of Kaiser NEVER bother to respond to my letters? Pragya Wagle, Nicole Lipes, John Loftus MD, Deborah Gould MD, Lawrence Hamilton, Anita Zuniga RN, Millicent Brown Hunter RN.

“PEOPLE ABOVE PROFITS” is supposed to be the motto of Kaiser Permanente.  The actions of the leadership are wholly inconsistent with this philosophy in the way they have disregarded a very loyal consultant of 20 years.

Probiotics: Still proven to help children and adults

Probiotics: Still proven to help children and adults

The proven benefits of Probiotics in children and adults is going on the front pages of the authoritative newspaper, the New York Times. The article is reiterating the well-known truism that good intestinal bacteria can help health. It is also a key component for counteracting malnutrition.

When born in the 50’s I was not told about this. I learned about it when I was traveling in my early 20s. Taking even brewer’s yeast tablets helped to prevent and lessen my bouts of diarrhea from travel (low-budget) in Asia. I believe and know that taking this form of probiotic saved my life.

Since then, as a natural medicine practitioner for decades, I have recommended specific strains to patients for particular conditions and for general health improvement. I take them myself and know from personal experience and scientific studies that probiotics give me a way to decrease any need for antibiotics. Purchase of the best strains of probiotics can be done through my online store at http://www.theredwoodclinic.metagenics.com. Feel free to call my office to see which particular strain offered online is more appropriate for your situation. Don’t think that a “cheaper” product is the same as the ones on that website because you always pay for the quality and safety. The potency of a probiotic varies by species, strain, and product.

Read here about what the New York Times is saying about probiotics in regions of poverty and poor nutrition

Probiotics: Still proven to help children and adults

Humans developed from creatures in the ocean. The interactions of various organisms over the past 5 billion years has led to our body. Included in our body are not only cells and organelles but also living species that work in cooperation with us. Most are in the intestinal tract. We need 70-75% minimum of them to be of the good variety to keep the bad, or pathogenic types, in control. This discussion is one I have been having with patients for the last 40 years, and it is good for this topic to come up again in mainstream journalism.

I also recently read that McDonalds is cutting back on human antibiotics used in their chicken farms. This is related to probiotics because whenever you take an antibiotic you MUST follow with probiotics of the right types and strains. Again, you can get the right ones by going online to http://www.theredwoodclinic.metagenics.com.

“In Defense of Food” – Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan “In defense of Food”

Michael Pollan (#MichaelPollan) has recently come out with a new documentary movie and a new book called “In defense of Food.” (#InDefenseofFood) The documentary movie will be coming out locally at 9:00 PM Wednesday, December 30 on KQED. A long review article was written by David Weigand In the San Francisco Chronicle Monday, December 28, 2015,  It is a review of the basic concepts inmichael pollan the book and an outline of the movie apparently.  As a big fan of Michael Pollan’s books, I enjoyed the article and the basic premise that Pollan “simply makes a case for eating right,” “eating food” — and not something that is manufactured.

The article has a brief overview of the different trends and
official recommendations since the fifties regarding proper nutrition. These recommendations are related to the mass production of consumables by the food manufacturing industry. There is a review of no- and low-fat diets, the injection of vitamins into manufactured foods, the creation of trans fatty acids, and the massive amounts of sugar and salt in processed foods.
The bottom line suggestions in the article are “eat only foods that will eventually rot. Avoid foods advertised on television. Eat food that has been cooked by humans. If it’s made from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t….There is no single food whose consumption or avoidance will answer our dietary prayers.”

To the degree that this article or Michael Pollan’s book goes, these are certainly good ideas and advice. But they don’t go far enough. It is naïve to say that that simply eating foods will correct the imbalances that our bodies currently have. The proliferation of toxins in the environment —

Pouring Mercury

Pouring Mercury

and consequently in our bodies, cannot be addressed simply by eating “food.” To address health issues it is necessary that each person have a carefully performed, individualized evaluation of functional capacities. Then there must be creation of a targeted remediation program that includes: detoxification, repair, and then replacement to address the years of exposure to processed foods and environmental chemicals.

chemical toxins in environmentThe nutritional deficits that lead to damaged tissue structures, like in the intestine, must be corrected along with other deficits, and just eating food, even if it is all strictly organic, is not enough for most people. The damage is too extensive to fix without intensive action.
This is where the experience of clinicians such as Dr. Jay Sordean come into the picture. Looking at the big picture as well as the details, taking into account traumas, toxicity, stress and structural issues – all of which play a role in the breakdown and positive repair of the body, mind, emotions and spirit.  This functional diagnostic medicine approach is lacking in your hospitals and most clinics.  Its absence is a reason why chronic illness and epidemics (diabetes, ADHD, autism, dementia, obesity, to name a few major ones) are prevalent in America today.  Dr. Jay’s series on issues such as functional causes of obesity and on female hormone imbalances are worth watching to understand why “just food” isn’t enough.  Time to call for an appointment 510-849-1176

Bioimpedence Analysis (BIA): What the heck?

Bioimpedence Analysis (BIA) – What is it anyway??

Bioimpedance Analysis is an accurate and quick test that gives us objective information we then use when designing & monitoring your individualized health programs (weight loss or weight gain, detoxification, immune challenges, etc).

How does it work? Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is the assessment of body composition using electrical tissue conductivity. It simply involves placing two adhesive electrodes on the hand and wrist, and two on the ankle and foot. The computer then runs a very small current through the body for 10 seconds while the patient is lying down. It’s non-invasive and comfortable. Results are printed instantly.

Health and well-being are closely tied to the health of the body’s fat-free mass and body cell mass compartments. By focusing attention on these mass compartments, therapeutic strategies are more effective because results can be measured objectively.

Bioimpedance Analysis Machines

The Biomarkers 2000 device, a bioimpedance analyzer, provides a direct readout of the impedance of the human body, and estimates of fat mass, fat-free mass (lean body mass), body cell mass, extracellular mass, total body water, intracellular water and extracellular water.
Applications: • Acute/Chronic Disease • Geriatrics • Obesity/Weight Loss Program • Lifestyle Assessment • Eating Disorders • Athletic Performance

How accurate is the test compared to other tests of this type? The BIA test is extremely accurate when performed properly. The current ‘gold standard’ for body fat testing only is still the hydrostatic method (getting dunked under the water), with an error margin of around .5 to 1 ½ %, whereas the BIA error margin is around 1 to 2 ½ %. However, the BIA accurately measures crucial data – including intracellular water (a good health indicator), extracellular water (a good toxin indicator) and phase angle (good indicator of cell health and fatty acid balance) – which the hydrostatic method does not. Also, the BIA is more convenient…you don’t need to get wet!

SUMMARY and VALIDITY: We have performed hundreds of these tests and have found that the results have been reliable to base our programs for detoxification, improving function, losing weight safely with respect to body composition, and monitoring improvements in overall function in combination with our other methods.

Sodium – Hair Mineral Analysis Element

Sodium – Hair Mineral Analysis Element and Body Functioning

Sodium is an important element and mineral test in the hair mineral analysis testing.  Sodium plays a significant role in your body and cells, often paired up with Potassium.  If you have high blood pressure your doctor will tell you to cut down on your Sodium. Doctors also look at the amount of Sodium in your blood during the comprehensive blood testing.  This hair deposition of Sodium gives additional and significant information about your body that the blood Sodium levels do not.

Diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, cardiovascular illness, obesity, cognitive decline — are just a few of the many conditions, malfunctions, or diseases that do not develop symptoms often until they are progressed quite a long time and Sodium may play a key role.  Functioning has to drop to around 40% for symptoms to be obvious — up until a drop of function by 60% we know about dysfunction by things other than symptoms.   Hair Mineral Analysis focuses on particular minerals –macro, micro, trace and heavy metals found stored in your hair.  Understanding the relationships among the different minerals found can tell us a lot about how your body is functioning.  Not only your body, but your emotions and hormones.

Try a Different Approach to Asthma

Asthma2Asthma makes breathing difficult for more than 34 million Americans. . Asthma in children is also on the rise, but with proper treatment for symptoms kids and adults can live well. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be powerful allies in the management of asthma, and they work well in conjunction with other types of treatment.

The Truth About Asthma

Asthma is an inflammatory disease in which the airways become blocked or narrowed, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Some people have long periods without symptoms, while others may always experience difficulty breathing. Asthma attacks occur when something triggers the inflammation of the respiratory system. Flare ups can be severe—sometimes even life-threatening.

Teamwork for Health

It is important to remember that you are a key part of controlling your asthma. Here are a few ways you can take an active part in your treatment:

  • Try keeping an asthma diary to track your specific asthma triggers.
  • Be sure to keep all of your health care providers fully informed. This includes talking to them about any medications or herbs you may be taking, as well as any changes in your symptoms.
  • Follow your practitioner’s recommendations for self-care. These might include exercises such as Qi Gong, yoga, dietary changes, or stress-relief measures such as meditation.

By making positive lifestyle choices and working closely with your practitioner, you’ll truly be taking charge of your asthma and your life.

What can cause an Asthma attack? The attacks are generally prompted by many things, including:

  • A cold, flu, bronchitis, or sinus infection
  • Allergens including dust mites, tree and grass pollen, mold, and animal dander
  • Irritants that include tobacco smoke, strong fragrances, and air pollution
  • Certain foods and food additives
  • Aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Changes in weather
  • Strong emotions such as anxiety, stress, grief and anger

Generally, the available approach of asthma treatment is to try and prevent attacks. This is usually done with regular use of anti-inflammatory medications, inhaled steroids and leukotriene inhibitors. Once an asthma attack is underway, quick-acting medications like corticosteroids may be able to relieve it.

Most of these medications can cause side effects such as nausea, headaches, muscle tremors, and insomnia. However, many people have found that acupuncture treatment may help reduce asthma attacks, improve lung function, and even lower the amount of medication needed.

A Whole Body approach to Asthma

In TCM, asthma is known as “Xiao Chuan”, which means “wheezing” and “shortness of breath”. It is caused by a variety of factors that involve an imbalance with Wei Qi (pronounced “way chee”), and an imbalance with one or more of the organ systems, generally the Lungs, Spleen or Kidney.

Asthma according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) goes beyond a simple diagnosis of “asthma”.

Below are some of the more common TCM diagnoses that your acupuncturist may discover and treat.

  • Invasion of Wind
  • Lung weakness
  • Kidney weakness
  • Spleen weakness
  • Liver imbalance
  • Liver Heat
  • Wei Qi deficiency
  • Phlegm/damp in the Lungs

An acupuncturist will take a holistic, or whole-body approach in order to determine what areas of the body are affected and out-of-balance and contributing to the attacks.

Since acupuncture and TCM take into account your overall well-being, your practitioner may also address other issues that may be contributing to your asthma, such as exercise, diet and stress. Acupuncture is a safe, effective, and pain-free approach to many conditions, and you may find that your overall health improves along with your asthma symptoms.

Dr. Jay Sordean and The Redwood Clinic in Berkeley, California can help manage your asthma. Call us at today (510) 849-1176 to set up a consultation.
