ANSWERS TO:   "5 Essential Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Natural Medicine Provider"

1.How long has the doctor been in practice? What is their licensure and for how long?

Does it really matter how long the doctor has been in practice?  For some problems, a recent graduate may have the skills to help.  But, the longer the experience the doctor has the more likely they can help you in a deeper and more long-lasting way.  This is especially true with natural medicine.  Dr. Sordean has more than 25 years of clinical experience to bring to the table for you.

And how about licensure?  Well, licensure in acupuncture is required in most states.  With respect to acupuncture, a license is required for everyone except MDs.  (And even with MDs, don't you think you should go to one who is also licensed in acupuncture and hasn't simply got a certificate in a weekend seminar?).  Dr. Sordean has been licensed in California since 1983 and nationally certified since 1985.

3. What types of natural medicine have they trained in?  Is the doctor knowledgable in a wide range of supplements?  Are they available on-site?

There are many types of natural medicine, including acupuncture, Chinese herbology, massage, Acupressure, Western herbology, homeopathy, functional medicine, vitamins, minerals, and other nutritionals products. California tests the knowledge of acupuncturists in Chinese and Japanese herbal formulations Dr. Jay Sordean has extensive training and experience in all of the above, and other staff consultants have trained in others.

The Redwood Clinic has a variety of supplements and products on-site from companies researched for efficacy and safety.  We provide this for the convenience and safety of patients we do consultations for.  There are also a couple of web-stores you can use to access some of these natural medicines which are listed in the Resources section of this website. 4. Do they have a wholistic approach or do they only look at symptom relief?

Wholistic (holistic) approaches look at the interrelationships between health and many aspects of the person's illness or wellness.  Dealing with this is a "Corrective Care" approach.

Symptoms are manifestations of dysfunction, malfunction, poor nutrition, disease, stagnation, emotional traumas, physical traumas, and stress -- to name a few of the underlying causes of the symptoms.  Symptoms are things like heat, reddness, swelling, pain, nausea, achiness.  Focusing on removing or eliminating the symptoms is called "Relief Care."  If you read the information on most medications (like aspirin, acetomenophen, for example) you will see that they talk about "relief" of symptoms.  Most insurance plans will cover treatment to relieve symptoms but often will not pay to get to and correct the underlying dysfunction or disease.

Relief care is like putting a band-aid on a wound.  The plaster patch only helps the body heal the wound.  The patch does not do the healing -- your body (blood, energy, nutrients, attitude, etc.) naturally does the healing when the impediments to healing are removed.  Corrective care is helping the body do its own natural healing.  That is the wholistic care approach that we offer at The Redwood Clinic.  Relief care is a part of the bigger picture; corrective care is aimed at getting your own functioning optimal so as to not require the continued use of drugs or other foreign substances in the body. 5. Do they have further post-licensure qualifications, training, and/or certifications?

Licensure is the standard and foundation level to practice safely.  Nevertheless, the dedicated professional will do study and training beyond the introductory level represented by the license.  Dr. Jay Sordean has spent more than 30 years studying many areas beyond the basics.  He has advanced certifications such as Certified Traditional Naturopath, Qualified Medical Evaluator, and Diplomate of the National Board of Acupuncture Orthopedics and National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  Further information on continuing education can be found in resume.
